Speech - Speaking to Promote Social Cohesion

Hi kids, hope you are all well. For Speech class we will be working on "Speaking to Promote Social Cohesion".

Speeches given as a part of ceremonies often serve to pull together a community such as a school, an organization, a city, or a nation. The people who participate in the ceremony do so because it affirms their commitment to the community and helps preserve the community´s most important values.

In such speeches emotional appeals and efforts to heighten the audience´s identification with the speaker prevail over the use of logic. To be succesful in bringing groups together through such speeches, the speaker must appeal effectively to interests and values that he or she shares with the audience.

Basic organizational concepts for informative and persuasive speeches also pertain to speaking for ceremonies. That is to say, such speeches need a clear introduction, body, and conclusion with a limited number of main ideas in the body.

A perfect example for this kind of speech is the famous "I Have a Dream" speech given by Martin Luther King Jr. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bNBGvaSHWbY

Your assignment will be to write a 2 to 3 minute long speech that promotes social cohesion which will be presented in class on Monday, April 1st. If we are unable to come to school that day you may hand in your speech in Coordination or through the blog.
